Prior to applying for any credit cards, you should consider any large purchases, like cars or houses, coming up. We recommend to hold off on applying for new credit cards about 6 months prior to any large purchase.
What info will I need to apply?
When applying for a credit card, the banks ask for several basic pieces of information:
- Your personal information (social security number, date of birth, full name)
- Your address history, current and prior
- Your combined household income
- Whether or not you have a checking and savings account
- Your employment history
How will applying for a credit card impact my credit score?
Applying for a credit card has a very minor impact on your score. Most people think that applying for and using credit cards is a bad thing for their credit score. This couldn’t be more further from the truth. When used responsibly, credit cards can increase your credit score. Responsible credit card usage covers a couple of things: 1) never spend more than you can pay back and 2) always pay your bills in full and on time. So never live outside of your means and always pay your bills on time and you should see an increase in your credit score.
